Upwork Updates Spring 2026: Helping SMBs Get Work Done with AI

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are building new products, entering new markets, and solving new complex challenges in the AI era, often with lean teams and limited time.
The challenge isn’t ambition. It’s execution. Nearly half of SMBs say finding qualified talent is one of their biggest challenges, and more are turning to independent professionals as a way to stay agile and navigate today’s tough macro environment.1
Take it from Omic, a small business using AI to accelerate drug discovery and end disease, that relies on highly specialized expertise that is difficult to source through traditional hiring. With Upwork, their search for the right experts went from months to days, and they were able to operate at a much larger scale than their in-house team alone would allow.
Upwork Updates Spring 2026 is designed for these businesses.
Uma leads what’s new for SMBs
Upwork Updates Spring 2026 introduces new capabilities powered by Uma™, Upwork’s AI work agent, developed to help SMBs find, hire, and work with independent talent more effectively. It also brings a more intelligent platform experience, with a reimagined homepage and simpler navigation that make the full value of Upwork easier to unlock.
Hiring: Find the right talent — faster and with full confidence
For many SMBs, just getting through the hiring process is time-consuming and frustrating. Reviewing profiles, comparing experience, and narrowing down candidates can delay projects before they even begin.
With our Spring 2026 update, Uma goes from AI companion to a more capable agent that synthesizes insights, assists in evaluating candidates, and helps move decisions forward so SMBs can hire faster and with greater confidence.
What’s new:
- Uma-generated work history summaries — Each professional’s most relevant past work on Upwork is automatically synthesized into a clear, easy-to-scan summary. Uma makes it faster to evaluate experience side-by-side and compare talent more objectively.

- Uma Recruiter shortlisting — Uma automatically identifies and surfaces the most relevant professionals for a project based on requirements and past work. Currently available to Business Plus clients, this feature is now available in the Basic plan, and delivers a curated list of top-matching talent within six hours.
- Upwork app in ChatGPT — Talent discovery and first steps toward hiring can now happen directly within ChatGPT. Businesses can explore experts and move toward hiring without leaving the conversation where the idea was hatched.
As Matt Klein, digital director at Keiser Corporation, a fitness equipment manufacturer in California, put it: “Having access to top-tier freelancers on Upwork…we were able to identify and hire a strong contractor for a major initiative almost immediately. That early success gave us the confidence to lean further into the platform.”
Working: Start sooner and stay on track
Hiring faster is only part of the equation. Keeping work moving once a project begins is just as important, and managing freelance work isn’t always straightforward. Our research shows that managing freelancer relationships remains a top challenge for smaller companies, while speed to complete projects matters for teams that can’t afford delays.
The new features in our Spring 2026 release — including enhancements in Business Plus, our premium offering for growing SMBs — help businesses move from scoping conversations to execution, and stay aligned throughout.
What’s new:
- In-meeting contract generator — Key details from Upwork video meetings are captured, and Uma uses them to guide the development of a contract, helping businesses and talent move from discussion to hire faster. Upwork video meetings now also include faster AI-produced recaps, transcripts, and mobile compatibility.

- Work diary summaries — For Business Plus clients, Uma automatically summarizes hourly work activity into daily and weekly updates, helping to track progress.

- Improved project continuity — Also rolling out now with wide availability coming this month for Business Plus clients, when a hire isn’t the right fit, a new professional can be brought in while preserving project context and prior work, reducing disruption and keeping projects moving.
Platform: Experience a simpler, smarter Upwork
AI is creating new types of opportunities and expertise that SMBs can tap into. This release reflects a broader shift toward a more unified, AI-forward Upwork, including a refreshed homepage and redesigned navigation that make it easier for businesses and professionals to discover what’s possible.
What’s new:
- Reimagined homepage — The new AI-native Upwork homepage surfaces emerging AI roles and in-demand skills based on marketplace trends, helping businesses and talent discover relevant opportunities.

- More intuitive navigation — A redesigned navigation experience makes it easier to access key features, manage projects, and take action across the platform. Early access is available to Business Plus subscribers today, with broader availability rolling out soon.
Building what’s next for how work gets done
For SMBs, the future of work is about combining the power of AI with expert talent to move faster, stay flexible, and take on work that once felt out of reach. With Uma embedded more deeply across Upwork, businesses can turn a rough idea into a scoped project, identify the right expert in minutes, and start making progress the same day.
Speed, confidence, and continuity give growing businesses a real edge, and Upwork Updates Spring 2026 is designed to deliver that for every SMB, whether they’re launching a new product, breaking into an emergent market, or solving a highly technical challenge they’ve never faced before.
